The On-Pack Recycling Label Ltd is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, any profits being reinvested in our activities to promote recycling of packaging. The company, launched in March 2009, is registered with Companies House (registration number 06853461) and is also VAT-registered (180 9689 61).
In 2014 the Board was expanded to ensure the right mix of skills and experience for the further development of the scheme, with ten Directors in all. Some work for scheme members so understand the challenges faced when designing and specifying packaging. Others come from local and central government, recyclate processing, trade association and marketing backgrounds. The Chair is an independent and has been involved in the scheme since before its launch in 2009, as have two other Directors. See below for Board biographies.
We consult members, local authority and industry representatives and other stakeholders to inform our decisions.
WRAP is an observer and technical adviser to the Board. It does not have voting rights.
Our Operating Model
We operate the scheme under an exclusive licence from WRAP to use the ‘Recycle Now‘ iconography. Under the scheme OPRL Ltd sub-licenses this right to any company placing own brand or branded consumer packaging on the UK market, whether or not they are themselves based in the UK. It is not permissible to use the ‘Recycle Now’ swoosh on packaging while outside OPRL membership: we enforce our rights.
We have a Service Level Agreement with WRAP for the support services they provide, and a contract with Ricardo-AEA who undertake our compliance monitoring. We also contract a range of administrative services.
We are jointly owned by organisations sharing our objective of maximising the effective recycling of packaging materials. Currently our owners are the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment UK (ACE UK), the British Retail Consortium, the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) and Recycling of Used Plastics Ltd (RECOUP). We operate as an arm’s length, not-for-profit company so do not distribute any profits to our owners, but reinvest them in our company to improve services for members, and to further our objective.
